Our first time with three teams in one day. This was the first tournament of the year for 2001 and we took a skeleton crew. Keeper, Rodi, Molly, Daisy, Tonka and Maggie were the only dogs along. We got creamed but had a nice time.

WG Keystone Moment

By Nikki Myers

Vegas was cold. Sunday morning I walked up to Katy and asked what kind of a place is this to play flyball? Rodi's chair had a layer of ice on it. She could literally freeze her butt. Sun was warm, air was cool, so you were alternately hot then cold while the clouds moved over. But, no wind, blue skies, and dogs love the cool weather. It was a great weekend to race. Thank you Christine for joining us and box loading for us. We were a skeleton crew and it would have been very difficult to scrounge up a box loader each race. The way the division fell had us in the same division as a TNG team if that gives you any idea about our chances for toys. When we ran well, our times were good. Several under 24 and several just an eye blink over.

On Sunday we even had a win with 77.20 seconds. One of those Woof Gang Keystone moments that made the judge chuckle. It was late on the second day and Daisy, Molly and Rodi had been running every heat all weekend. Tonka, who ran beautifully on Saturday was very distracted on Sunday. He started, got over two jumps and began to sniff. Lisa called him off and Mike let Daisy go. The other team in the mean time had run border collie #1, border collie #2 and their jack russell. Judy and I didn't even bother to run our dogs. Why tire them?

Flying Colors' fourth dog missed all the jumps on the way back. They lined him up again, he did the same thing. They sent him a third time and he took off out of the ring. The heat hadn't finished, neither team had run four dogs. Judy sent Molly, I hollared to Lisa (who had already put Tonka in the kennel and had Keeper out) "get Tonka ready to rerun", I sent Rodi and the big beautiful Tonka made one clean run. I don't think Flying Colors' ever did come back. Other than that we ran okay. More "no times" than we usually have but the teams we were racing were pretty solid and itdidn't pay to rerun and tire the dogs.

Tonka ran enough clean runs on Saturday to earn his Flyball Dog title. Keeper is getting closer to her next title. I think Mike said she is like 1,100 points away. Rodi is 1,300 points or so away from taking the #1 spot away from Ben. Maggie BOMBED! It was just too overwhelming for her. But we did get some good training experience during warm-ups.

Now for the social report.

We went to the Monte Carlo Buffett this time. Pretty good and not expensive. GREAT crab salad! Lisa, Mike and Judy were there early enough on Friday to hit the seafood buffet at the Rio. They rubbed it in all day Saturday too. As far as Saturday morning went, I'll leave you with this little fact for those of you that know the area. It takes a 30 year old woman 20 minutes to walk from Sam's Town to the tournament site.

The drive to Yuma was long but the weekend was very nice. We didn't get to see too much of the air show flyovers. A couple jets were doing loops in the distance. They looked like tiny dots against the clouds. It was overcast and cool on Saturday which is very good for racing. We had a 5/5 round robin followed by a 3/3 round robin. It worked out very nicely. We rotated big dogs and traded off Rodi and Sparky as height dogs. Sunday gave us more sun. It got pretty warm for racing canines but not to the point of overheating. This is the day we got the airshow. Long strings of a bird that looked like a crane or heron, flew over in waves. It was incredible. Driving many of the retrievers to distraction.

This weekend brought us another first for Woof Gang Flyball. Saturday our problem was we were running too fast. A good problem to have actually when you think about all the possible problems. All day I had been checking with the score table to be sure we hadn't broken out. The one race I didn't Daisy, Cody, Rio and Sparky had three fantastic heats and broke out all three. Anyway, the result of that was that we were out of the tournament placings, lost the NAFA points for those heats we broke out but were able to run the last of our races for points only. Sunday the break out time was half a second lower and that gave us a little more breathing room. We only broke out once.

Lynn and Rio at Yuma, AZ

Woof Gang kicked furry butt and came in 1st in div. 5. I have to mentioned how wonderfully Sparky competed all weekend. No reruns for that little dog. Keene, Thank you for box loading all weekend. Our dogs are running well. They are solid, not distracted (even by the Bar B Que) and loose goldens crashing our jumps. A red golden from the other team saw Rio and fell in love. He just had to come visit. Fur and jumps were flying but Rio just wanted to get his ball. It didn't phase him a bit.

Good Job Dogs! And handlers too.

Fools For Flyball, Chula Vista March 31st and April 1st by Nikki Meyers I was feeling pretty badly on Sunday morning. Rodi was pulled from racing Saturday afternoon, we thought because of pain. She wasn't feeling well Sunday morning either and wasn't going to race all day. When it was apparent that she wouldn't be racing anymore on Saturday, the team moved to a place where they could get in a quick practice at 16 inches. They did wonderfully. When they raced, they were getting better times than when Rodi raced. Not sure how I feel about that, but I am very grateful for the effort. On Sunday we were faced with only one option. Keeping the Saturday team intact since they were the only group that could jump 16 inches, and take the dogs that cannot and put them on the other team. Wiz, Rags, Tonka, Tess, Servo were all put on Peach's team. I kept referring to us as the band aide and glue teams. But you kicked furry booty! The 16 inch team

As a first time handler with a new dog at our first tournament I had many thoughts and feelings go through my head. The outstanding feeling I had was sheer delight to see Shelby go and return over the jumps, even if it were only a few times. The atmosphere of the tournament was so positive and everyone is so friendly and willing to speak to you. I welcome all the helpful hints from our team members as well as new people I met. Flyball is my favorite sport to do with my dog and I have tried it all in the past years. It was great fun watching our dogs run as well as the other teams. What an interesting sport and so much to learn. Shelby and I are very happy to be part of the Woof Gang team and cherish the friendships we made. -- Carol & Shelby

  • The Pickiest Paws - Peach...who apparantly decided that someone had "fouled" HER ring and refused to go down the lane in the last 2 races....(it's ok honey, I wouldn't want to step in it either)

Weekend Highlights

Real Winners Running by the River

  • Best Tournament Site - By far this has to be one of my favorites! The weather was beautiful, the rings almost completely shaded most of the time, tons of huge trees, the river for the dogs to play in....

  • Funnest Tourny - Again, gotta be Bark in the Park. From the most incredible raffle prizes, to the ribbons given to all dogs earning titles, to special awards, to the crazy hat contest, to the trivia game, to the HUGE amount of door prizes given, to the wonderful dinner they put on right there on site, to a smoothly run tourny...it was great!

  • Biggest Acomplishment - Maggie ran enough complete heats to earn her FDX title!!! YEAH MAGGIE!!!!!!!!!

  • Second Biggest Accomplishment - We took 2nd place on sunday! WOW!!!!

  • Worst Knees - Kay and Judy gimped around with knee injuries all weekend...OUCH!

  • Worst Volleyball Players - the little girls who kept hitting the ball into our camp area and almost taking out our little Rodi :(

  • Most Swimming Pools - WOW! 3 cool of pools at the end of each ring!!!!

  • Best Save - Maggie....hits the box, ball flies out and hits her, bounces straight up over top of and lands behind the box, she goes behind the box, gets her ball and completes her run! YEAH!!!

  • Best Photos - I now finally have a pic of Tonka running the course!!! Thanks Judy for buying it for me :)))

  • Worst Collision - (almost) Lineup....Daisy, Molly, Tonka, Maggie....I release Tonka and Maggie is so wiggly, she gets loose from Nikki and chases Tonka down the lane, Tonka hits box, gets ball, comes over first jump and spits ball and jumps aside just in time to miss squshing Maggie into an chessie cowpie!

  • Best Boxloaders - Kay and Mike.....what teamwork, Mike puts box in and tries to load, Tonka decides he is way to interesting and starts not bringing his ball back, Maggie just doesn't want to go down to the box at all, so we had to switch and have Kay load. the ground was so sandy that the first time she loaded, Daisy went down, hit the box and took it right out of the ground, Kay included! What teamwork :)

  • Best Light Tree - our ring (ring2) had no lights that worked so we raced the ENTIRE tourny with hand starts by our esteemed (funny hat and gloves) judges Ule and hand timers, eyes only box and line judges...it was like stepping back into the dark ages of flyball :)

  • Best Distraction - Mollys Goose was a REAL inticing toy for the big black lab on the Pawdamonium team....the owner could not get his dog to focus down the lane to the box, he just kept eyeballing that big fat goose laying on the ground next to Molly! The guy even asked Judy to Move that goose! LOLOL!!!! I stuck my fat butt in the dogs face to block his view and he finally focussed on the box..LOLOL!!!

  • Biggest Little Girl Dog- Maggie - Cracked us all up when Maggie went down the lane and came back with a FULL SIZE TENNIS BALL!!!!!!! What a woman!!! All in all it was a fun tourny, wish more of you could have come to enjoy it :))) Plan on it next year!!!

Weekend Highlights

This tournament was the real winner.
It was fun, short, and full of surprises

  • Shortest Tourney - Saturday only. We were rained out on Sunday.

  • Shortest Course - The space was limited so there was not much room for Daisy and the other fast dogs to slow down.

  • Nicest Surprise - Rags earned her FDCH title...Thank you to the team for making a special announcement during our race. I was quite surprised. That night at dinner, Bea bought me a Cadillac margarita to celebrate. It was smooth. I wish my flyball passes were that smooth. Jessie, we were thinking of you; I had a drink and Rags went into the "drink".

  • The Biggest Surprise - Some of us warm up but others cool down.... Sunday morning we were busy packing up and taking down the tents when we heard Lynn yell "Oh! Judy, I am so-o-o-o sorry". We turned around just in time to see Judy take an ice cold shower. The tents were filled with rainwater from the night before and without thinking Lynn lowered one corner just as Judy was bending over to pick up her gear. Can't repeat Judy's response, this is a "G" rated site.

  • The Funniest Surprise - Bart was the winner of the "Name-That-Tune" (or should I say "Toone") contest. He won a Bugs Bunny Mug and some Cappuccino Mix.

  • Best Crab Catchers - Maggie and Pebbles went to the beach and caught the crabs. Woops! I mean they discovered the funny little sea critters. Then Maggie rolled in dead seaweed and the remains of a sea lion. Pe-e-e-w!

  • Biggest Nose-dive - Maggie did a 'face plant' on the last jump. It will take more than Tide to remove the grass stains on her nose. I think she was trying to rub out the fish smells.

  • Biggest Distraction - Rocket and Peach got a whiff of the ponies and the animals in the petting zoo located just behind the box. We had to coral them back into the ring to finish the races. We assumed that Rocket was going after the birds, but I didn't know Jack Russell's were lama retrievers.

  • Most accomplished Flirt - Lynn batted her eyelashes at the maître d' to get some service; he was very accommodating and for our troubles, he took $15 off the bill .... I heard Lynn might be going back for seconds.

  • Best Secrete Weapon - For the last race we fixed Sophie a special ball for each heat. She didn't drop a one.

  • Best Race - goes to the Mavericks (Daisy, Molly, Sophie, and Peach). It was down to the last race as to who would take Division 1st. The Maverick had to take 3/5 heats to win. They had 5 perfect heats, good passing, and no mistakes. Unfortunately, they were beat by a nose on most of the races. Mavericks took 2nd Place

  • Most Left Out - There were 5 teams in Division 4. The Outlaws placed 4th. There were prizes for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and Last place....Bummer!

  • Most surfing - Max and Sophie made several trips to the beach before, in-between, and after the races. They were in Water-Dog Heaven. I know a "Brown Dog" that was mighty jealous. The Longest Drive - Once again goes to Melinda. She got up at 3AM to pack all here animals in the van so they could race on Sunday not knowing that the tournament had been canceled. On the way she had a scary "Firestone Moment". Her tire shredded. AAA called Nikki to relay the message that she was stuck but would get her tire changed and be on her way again. No injuries thank goodness

  • Worst timing - Since the tournament was canceled on Sunday we got home around 9:30 AM. I forgot that the Long Beach Marathon was going on and we couldn't get home. All the streets were blocked off. After negotiating, or maybe I should say the "N" word (navigating) the streets we found our way in. It was at that point I realized that I didn't have a house key, and I am too fat to fit through the doggie door. My husband was in San Diego and he had the keys. I convinced Bea to leave me and I would go visit my neighbors for a couple of hours. It took Marv 4 hours to get home. I didn't want to try the doggie door; for fear that I would get stuck and set off the alarm. I could just picture the police arriving to fine my both backside and Rags in the back yard.

The Biggest Break

By Caroway's Ragtime Gal (Rags)

We woke up early Saturday morning and drove to Ventura with Peach and her mom. My master plan was already in the works. I was a good little dog and didn't bark at humans on motorcycles, bicycles, or skateboards. And when we approached the tournament site at the Ventura Harbor Village I didn't tell anyone that Peach informed me that we would be surrounded by water. Nobody knew of my big plan and things just seem to be falling in place. We were not in the first race of the day that gave me more time to plot my big break.

When it was almost time for the race my mom and I walked over to ring one. Mom was so busy dancing like Groucho Marx to the funny music of the silent movie era that she didn't notice me whispering to Rio. I think she thought that we were kissing like we usually do. Rio and I worked out a great diversion for my plan. Then to my delight, we had a rather long break while we waited for the other team to finish racing in ring two. Mom made me dance some more to this goofy 60's rock-n-roll music. The whole time I was pulling her toward the box so she would think all I wanted to do was play flyball. Wiz and I did a little dancing and kissing while Maggie wiggled in her mom's arms. The plan was working the humans were distracted. Then it was time to warm-up. Rio went into action. He sat in front of the box and waited for his mom's recall. I knew if my mom saw him being so good it would remind her of how I used to do that too. It worked and I gained her trust. She told me to sit and then she walked away. I waited until she was at the other end and then I took off down the lane. I ran full steam toward her and grabbed the ball running as fast as I could. Mom watched me run. I knew that she was thinking that I would turn to the left and come back to play tug-of-war like I always did….…….NOT!

This was my big break. I ran all the way to the end and made a sharp turn to the right heading full speed towards the bay. She couldn't have caught me even if she was Wilma Rudolph (That tells you how old my mom is). I could hear her screaming my name but I pretended not to hear because the music was so loud and all the other dogs were cheering me on. I could see them with paws in the air and hear them chanting "Woof, woof, woof" just like Julia Roberts in "Pretty woman". Max and Sophie were screaming, "Go for it Rags". Rocket yelled, "Rags, you are the bomb" and Tess shouted, "Brown dogs rule!"

I made it to the edge of the sidewalk and could see that the ten-foot cliff was steep and there were large rocks at the bottom. It was just like Molly and Daisy said it would be. Within seconds I was at the bottom and made a flying leap into the bay. My form was a perfect 10. You know the kind that only Chessies can do. Water splashed up on both sides. I was in heaven. There were commercial fishing boats to my right and left but open water straight ahead. I was on my way out to sea when I faintly heard my mom's voice calling my name. I was going to ignore her until I heard those bone chilling words. "Okay Rags, I'm leaving. Good-bye, I'm getting in the car". I turned around just in time to see her disappear over the cliff.

I was alone. I hate when that happens. I could see a crowd of people standing on cliff laughing. Were they laughing at me because my mommy left me, or were they laughing at me because I was a "brown clown"? I couldn't take it. I love the water more than anything, but not more than my mommy. I climbed out of the bay and scampered up the cliff searching for my mom. I remember one day a few years ago I swam in the bay at home, mom ran away from me and when I reached the top, she came back to get me. That time I waited until she almost reached me and then jumped back into the water. That was a really neat trick. I wonder if I would be able to pull it off again?

When I finally arrive at the top of the cliff, I couldn't see mom through all the laughing-human. All I could see were legs. Then suddenly I heard her voice yell out to someone in the crowd, "Grab her". I turned to leap back in the water, but it was too late. Someone grabbed my harness and I was hooked like a fish on a gaff. She tricked me again.

Mom took a hold of my harness and marched me back to the starting line. She was so relieved that we didn't miss the start she didn't seem to care that she was as wet as I was. She must have worried about me because the rest of the day she greeted me with open arms and treats at the end each races. She looked like a Greco Roman wrestler, there was no way I could have gone around her. Rodi later told me that her mom and the rest of the team's humans didn't even notice that I was AWOL, but when they found out they were all put on "Grab the Rags" alert.

The first ten races I ran down to the box got the ball but on my return I would glance over at the bay. It was so tempting. Maybe if I was racing in ring two I might have tried it again. That ring was much closer to the bay. But I had it pretty good the way it was, mom was hugging me and feeding me all day long.

Later that day while we were getting ready to race another race a big loud voice called my name (I think humans call it a PA system). It said that I had just earned my FDCH title. That must be a big deal because my mom was petting my head, kissing my ears, and rubbing my belly. All the humans were yelling my name as they clapped and cheered. My mom was so nervous that she let me go too soon on the next race and I almost bumped into my good bud Rio. I could see him coming and realized that there would not be enough room for both of us to go through the jump together so I went around and let him finish. I was proud of my new title and glad I decided to play flyball that day. I can always try swimming another day.

  • Most versatile new dog - Jack - What a fine job he is doing as a greenie, running whenever needed, 8", 15" whatever, whenever....we have decided you cannot move to NY...LOLOLOL!!!!

  • Hardest Worker - Melinda....driving from Whittier to Chula vista BOTH DAYS and completely tearing down her set up area BOTH DAYS and dealing with 5 dogs, 3 canopies, 4 x-pens, and all the works BOTH DAYS...and I thought I felt like my body has been hit by a bus this am..LOLOL!! And she is talking about getting ANOTHER DOG?????????

  • Sleepiest Chesapeake - Ida, who ran about 40 flawless heats in the lane we had set up behind our tents....I have hope for her :)

  • BIGGEST PLEASANT SURPRISE!!! - Melinda's wonderful little Dodger dog who decided for some unknown reason that he CAN see enough to play flyball and ran a bunch of heats in the practice lane!!! He first did a few recalls, then hit the box a few times, then started running the full course, catching the ball and running faster than he has ever run before!!! He was enjoying himself so much that when he was coming back to Melinda, he wouldn't let her catch him, spit the ball out and take off down the lane again..LOLOL!!! WE WERE ROLLING!!!
    So.....

  • Biggest comeback - Dodger, watch him to be entered as an extra dog sometime in the near future!!!!!!!

HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to the Green Dogs!!!!

by Mike Bassett and Nikki Myers Five New Titles - Milo FD and FDX, Rocket FD, Servo FDCH, and Jack FDCH

Well Gang...it was a good weekend for the new dogs. Milo did great he earned his FD and FDX. Rocket also did great earning his FD we are looking for him to do a wonderful job at Del Mar. Servo and Jack earned their FDCH titles. Both our teams did super over the weekend. My hats off for the dogs on Sunday, it was hot all day.

Mike

All weekend the dogs ran well...

Saturday was the best. Best weather, best finishes. Milo had a couple brain farts, but so did out boxloader so it was okay. He settled enough to get his FD and FDX this weekend. Rocket also took some time to get in the swing, but he also earned his FD this weekend. Shelby had one race that her body attended but her brain didn't . Maggie gave me the puppy finger once on Sunday. Just at the end. I told her while she stood there in the lane, blinking and barking at me "this is the last heat. Just finish it and we can go home." so she turned around and finished the heat.

Nikki

Molly takes on the other team.....

Molly and Rowdy from Rock N Rovers had one of the hardest collisions I've ever seen on Saturday. But I can attest to the power of Molly's chest when she hits you strainght on. She just gave that pup a dirty look and continued to the box. We were all more concerned withe the electric eye at the start line that went flying along with Rowdy.

Nikki

>

No Bees, Just Cake.....

A bee swarm visited breifly on Saturday. No one was stung that I heard but it did make a few spectators run for cover. It got so hot on Sunday that Laura was layering herself with ice packs to stay comfortable. We enjoyed Mothers day cake (thank you Judy) and a little celebration for our Woof Gang Mom's.

Nikki

I have many thank yous...

for Lynn and Ralph for taking some of my stuff home. Laura and Brock for doing the same. Mike and Judy for transporting the boxes and balls, and Lynn and Bruce for the use of cell phones all day, and a big thank you to Jen for taking me and the four dogs home.

New Title: Maggie: FDCH

Another tourney gets off to a strange start....

by Lisa Heitmiller

  • New title holder! Maggie earned her FDCH? COOL!!!!

  • Best Flyball Trip Shopping Spree: Mike, Judy and I hit the outlet mall on the way in to Vegas and I bought $40 worth of junk food/Moose munch at Harry and David store...YUMMY!!!!

  • Killer Deal: We stopped at Wal Mart to pick up a plastic pool for the dogs and when we got the the park noticed that there were 2 pools stuck together....such a bargain.

  • Latest to a tourney: Nikki...stuck on the 15 fwy accident that closed the fwy for awhile and she missed the first race...we had to forfeit the 4 heats but got to race the rest after she arrived.

  • Wildest Water fight: Jen's boys! Oh my!!! Made early use of the killer deal pools!

  • Most distracted: AGAIN! Tonka....couldn't do a darn thing right on Sat. I Gave up on him after a few races. ..... The big "SNIP" is in his future.

  • Highest 4 paws on the box: Jack was stuffing his back paws in the ball holes!! WOW!!!

  • Best Cool Down: The shower that Molly gave me every time she hit the box when I was loading...it would just SPRAY me!!

  • Most unpredictable turn direction: Daisy couldn't decide whether to zig or zag. She really wants to watch the competition all of a sudden. I will ask how to fix that at the seminar this weekend.

  • Most amazing finish: How we came in 4th out of 5 on sat was beyond me, considering how we missed the first race and Tonka blew so many after that...but we won TOYS!!!!!

  • Most embarrassing moment: was for me while I watched and waited for Nikki to take a picture of a purple ball with a smiley face on it in front of the Excaliber Casino ...people were staring....

Note: Nikki said it was a pink ball; I guess if any one would know the difference between pink and purple it would be Nikki.

  • Best Saturday Shopping Spree: The Liquor Barn that Nikki and I found on the way back to the tourney site.....Good deals!! (CHOCOLATE MINT LIQUOR...YUMMMY!!!)

  • Best New Beer: Flying Dog Ales new one called...get this.. IN HEAT WHEAT! (ya gotta see the label)

  • Windiest Start: Man Sat afternoon was windy when we first arrived at the park! WHEW!!!!

  • Worst Beginning for a Green Dog :Ida.....crashed and burned...literally in her first race...which became her last real quick like.

  • Best Day: Maggie...both days...not ONE puppy finger, and a new title!!! FDCH!!!

  • Strongest Last minute Push: for points has to be Rodi...I am so happy for her...we WILL get her to the top!!!!!! She got another ninety some odd points this weekend!! YEAH!!!!

  • 2nd Best Finish: I have no clue what place we came in on Sat but we got TOYS again!!!

  • Most in love with her toy: Ida would not put hers down all night and kept yelling at Rodi and Tonka anytime they came near her kennel ...she was so worried she was gonna loose it.

  • Least Traffic coming home: Definitely this trip.

The return of the One-Eyed-Jack and the shot heard 'round the world.

by Mike Nikki Meyers

Chula Vista is always a nice place to play Flyball. We were sharing the park with agility again but that only makes the atmosphere more exciting. On Saturday it turned out that we had an extra space so we jotted Dodger's name and number down. Both teams, Wranglers: Daisy, Cody, Tess, Jack, Rodi and Maggie, and the Outlaws: Wiz, Molly, Pixel, Servo, Peach and Dodger, ran well with very few mistakes. Wranglers were seeded somewhere near the middle of their division and Outlaws at the bottom of theirs.

Bea, needing to race home and get to a birthday dinner, left the height dog spot to Dodger for the very last race. We hadn't been keeping up on any or our heats won or times for teams, so when we finished the last race, winning one out of four because Dodger et all kept running clean, to find we were tied for first, we were shocked. Run off time and the team seeded top in the division smoked us in a best of five. But after the judge went over the wins for the day, she found on of Bark in the Parks wins was a breakout and should have been recorded as a loss. So we hadn't even needed to be in a run off, we won first place outright. All because that little man completed all his heats correctly and we beat the other team in our last race in one heat. The Wranglers ran well earning Rodi a chunk of points towards that number one Silky spot (Ben is going down!) and got second place. But the day was definitely Dodger's. We loved seeing him run again.

Sunday the weather was not as great. It was hotter and we were napping all day. Maybe the napping was from lack of sleep. Nikki was on a camping pad. Jen and boys were in a tent. Andrea was in the back of Nikki's truck reading web pages instead of sleeping. But camp outs are always fun. Shelby had a great day being the only height dog on her team. When she builds up that stamina there won't be anything stopping her. She earned her Flyball Dog Excellent title the second race. Congratulations Shelby and Carol. Both teams finished with fourths without run-offs yeehaw and we got out of the tournament site by five o'clock. But talk about a distraction. A handler from another team went up that big hill and shot off a 22 caliber dummy launcher for her dog. Did she think we wouldn't all hear it? Every field trained dog turned and looked for birds. Every handler yelled up the hill. The racing came to a complete halt. Not too few dogs were upset by that sound. But Flyball is one of those sports that appear to be a good stress release for most dogs. So they turned right around and ran their races.

We are looking forward to Del Mar in a couple weeks.

Real Winners

by Lisa Heitmiller

I was not there on Sat so this little report is for sunday only....

You know that old expression "when the light bulb comes on" ? Well....here goes......

Brightest light bulb - Shelby!!!!!! Wow!!! Is all I can say. We put together a 15" jumping team for Shelby not knowing how she would do and she showed us that her light bulb has come on and she now KNOWS the game and she looks like she is really ENJOYING the game! She ran 4 of 4 all day, every race and I only recall one brainfart the entire day!!! She was running fast, holding her ball WAY across the line all the way back to mom!!! See Carol, we kept telling you patience was a virtue :) Aren't you glad you stuck with it??? AWSOME BLOSSOM!!!!!!!

Dimmest light bulb...and growing dimmer by the tournament - Tonka. My boy has just lost all desire to go down to the box, refused more than not this trip out and after Del Mar we will be taking time off from tournys to get his balls cut off and his brain in order. Hopefull he will be a better boy this fall

Best little terror - Maggie who had another little terrier cross over to see what she was all about. Luckily Maggie kept her cool and didn't rip its face off, but it sent her into a bit of a snit for the rest of the day. Kept staring Rodi down and just had that "look"

Best Ball Shagger - Phil, you did a great job!!! Thank you!!!! :)))

Best Creeper - Rodi got some goooood points on sat from what they tell me and she is slowly and quietly creeping up to the #1 Silky position. Mike, what is Rodis total points right now after this weekend?

Scariest landsharks - These 3 little terriers that somebody had tied up to the fence right behind the racing lane and we had to pick up Maggie and Rodi to walk by them, what was that all about? (hey Nikki...remember the dog show up north when we walked Vanna through the field of Cairn terriers? Totally brought back that memory..LOLOL!!!

Biggest bummer - Judy told us that they did indead have vandalism there at the site sat night at the agility field, someone broke into a truck, tore up all kinds of stuff, put sand in the fuel tank and destroyed property, must have been a very sore looser :(

Most flyball chessies - Man...3 new puppies out at the tourny this weekend, all 3 from the same litter (a friend of mine) and 2 of them with Runamuck and 1 with Mark from Lickety splits. Man there was brown everywhere you looked! LOLOL!!!

Worst dog bite - Jackie from Rock n Rovers got in the middle of a dog spat last week and came out with a broken finger! OUCH!!!!

Best lunchbreak fun - The human flyball racing was back again and Jens kids partook in the fun with Jen running around snapping pics of them...it was pretty cute :)

Most Awsome Teamwork - man, this group was great this weekend!!! Everyone helped out at every race, video taping, watching passes, holding dogs, helping with the box, I don't think I saw one race where anyone sat back at the camp area! Thanks you guys!! AWSOME!!!!!

Nicest comment -"Your group is really "clan ish" I had to ask for further definition....you group is really clannish, meaning you guys seem very close and look like you are having the best time at tournys. WELL...didn't my chest puff out and I got real proud and told her she was right, that we DO have a great time and have as much fun as possible no matter where we place! This was told to me by the captain of the Runamuck team (I feel bad I forget her name :(

Overall a great weekend was had by all :)

Real Winners: Fresno, March 22nd and 23rd

By Lisa Heitmiller

Well ...another tourney under our belt and what a wild ride!

Mike and Judy, Ellen and eff, Lynn and Ralph all drove their RV's to Fresno and set up camp right in the parking lot of the Fresno indoor soccer club. Nikki, Bruce and I parked right in front of the motor homes and we had our own little Woof Gang city. Friday night we all went down to the local brew pub called "The Bulldog Brewery" They had good food and good brew and a cool t-shirt that had a bulldog on the front with the saying "Bite Me" and underneath it said "Sit, Stay, Eat...it was really cute! We had a great time!!!

Sat morning they opened up the building to us and we found ourselves having a much larger space to camp in than we anticipated. There was plenty of room for our dogs, our chairs and our baby Cade. They had 2 rings stuffed into the main soccer field that were divided by really thick orange barricade mesh so the dogs never really looked at the other ring. There was a huge runback area and the dogs and handlers entered from the rear for our ring which was real convenient for us. The Judges were very nice and patient and seemed to have a good time overall. Terri the organizer did a wonderful job; it is tough putting on a tourney even tougher when you only have a total of 7 club members! WOW!!!

Sat racing went well, Milo only had 1 run amuck session after one of his recalls, and he somehow ended up over in the other ring, running wild, visiting the line judges ...YEEHAW!!! Once they rounded him up, he got his brain in the game and ran a flawless weekend. We had Bruce guarding the back entrance so Milo couldn't escape. The Wranglers team on Sat...Moly, Pixel, Rocket, Ida, and Milo took first place in their division which was a bittersweet win over Bark in the Park. We tied them for first place but since we had beat them head to head and had a faster time of the day than they did we won these HUGE squeaky bone toys for the dogs!! The Mavericks ran real well too but they were just out seeded for time so no win for them...BUT....they racked up quite a few points for Rodi and Cody who are pushing close to titles.

Sat night after racing, Nikki and I bummed Bruce's shower at the motel before we set up for the pot luck dinner back at the RV' s... what a spread!!! Thanks to Lynn and Ralph (the margarita man of the eve) for hosting us in front of their motor home and Bruce and Mike for cooking up the meat! Nikki, Ellen and Lynn for getting it all together....Killer cajun shrimp Mike!!!! There ended up being a ton of food leftover for lunch on sunday!!! It was fun sitting around talking about good times, past times, the fun we've had over the years with the Gang. I can honestly say that sat was one of the best days of racing and fun that I have had in awhile.

Sunday was a completely different animal altogether. Sunday things were going well for both teams, the Mavericks with Rodi were again racking up some good points and the Wranglers were kicking butt and were again headed for first place in their division. We had to watch real close as we had been nearing a breakout. Then came race #24....a race that will live in infamy in the Woof Gang archives. Nikki was asked to watch the clock at the scorekeepers desk to keep a very close eye on our times as we were sooo close to breaking out with this team, Milo was running HARD and Ida was really getting into a rhythm and running some 4.3 second heats. Mike and I clearly goofed when we sent in this seed time and will try to be more cautious in our seeding with Milo and Ida in the future, we have not seen much of them to really know how they would do, and this surface was definitely to Molly and Pixels liking as they were both running really hard too! Nikki and Lynn were at the desk, watching our times, telling Judy, Ellen and Brock how far to keep their passing as not to break out; we finished all 4 heats with 4 wins. The Wranglers got to finish racing the day and were able to collect some more NAFA points for their dogs but no winnings to take home even though we won every single race the entire day except the first heat of the day which was a NT Every race of the day for this team was a 25 pointer!!!!!! THE WOOF GANGS BEST FINISH EVER IN HISTORY THAT I RECALL and one to be remembered by all!! So huge kudos to Ida, Molly, Pixel, Rocket, and Milo for an awesome job! They were flawless!Daisy, Cody, Rio and Rodi put forth their best effort also and Rodi came home with over 400 points for this tourney (also the most ever for her I believe) ! She is getting closer to her FMX every tourny...keep it up girlfriend! You can do it!!! We all have faith and we will all keep pushing!

Real Winners

Biggest Tourney put on by a small group of people:
Leap of Faith! What a team....7 people put this on, ran it smoothly, got to run their own dogs...43 teams each day...HUGE! Great job!

Most creative Potty area:
Sod...hmmm...never would have thought it would work so well....Ida liked it.

Best food vendor:
Taco Bell in the parking lot, how could you go wrong

Best teamwork box loaders:
Ellen and Jeff ...great job you guys! The boxes had to be carried about 50 ft to get to the rings so that there could be a longer run back area. Definitely a 2 person job! Thanks!

Best single box loader:
Mike who had to carry it all by himself...did you need some Tylenol for your back today?

Wildest run amuck:
Milo who ended up over in the other ring running with the big dogs.

Best comeback:
Rocket did a great job this weekend considering his major brain farts at the demo and the last few practices....he did a great job!

Most improved Greenies:
Milo and Ida simply shined this weekend, only a couple of small mistakes. Great job!

Most interesting to other dog:
Rodi...who simply fascinated an Airedale who kept crossing over to check her out...that is one way to win a heat or 2.

Most challenged:
Cody...by the BC (Cowboy) who came over to try and steal his ball out of our box. Cody didn't let him win though

Most bugs:
The drive to Fresno left the front of our cars BLACK with bugs! ACH!

Best Baby:
Cade...what a great kid. He has to be the happiest baby ever! He was so cute on sunday with his hairdo.

Best hosts:
The RV brigade!!! Lynn and Ralph for hosting our pot luck, Nikki, Ellen for helping Lynn put it all together, Bruce and Mike for cooking and me for sitting on my butt eating the great food that everyone brought. Thanks Lynn and Ralph for letting Nikki share a bunk and Mike and Judy for letting me take over their couch.

Titles:
Cody 10,000 FMX, Ida and Rocket 500 FDCH

Cody FMX - Sorry Bruce

Biggest fopah:
Nikki and Lynn at the scorekeepers tabl. I still do not know what really happened.
